Thursday Mailbox Day

Here are more Mailbox activities to keep those little ones busy during the breaks or at school if you are a teacher.

Fall Craft: leaves

This vivid leaf project is simple to make! Place red and yellow powdered tempera paint in separate shakers. Shake a thin layer of powder onto a paper towel square using both colors. Then use a spray bottle to moisten the paper towel. The red and yellow powders blend together to make areas of orange! When the project is dry, cut a leaf shape from the paper towel. If desired, display this lovely leaf on a window or door!

Seasonal Craft: pumpkins

To begin, a child writes a short seasonal poem. He uses a white crayon to carefully copy his poem onto a sheet of white construction paper. Next, he uses a wide brush to paint over the paper with watercolor paints, watching as his words appear. To finish the project, the student trims the paper into a seasonal shape and then glues it onto a sheet of black paper.

Seasonal Craft: Columbus Day

In honor of Columbus Day and the flagship sailing vessel captained by Christopher Columbus, invite students to make this three-dimensional project.
Materials for one project:
  • 2 paper plates
  • scissors
  • white paper scraps
  • paintbrush
  • paper or fabric scraps
  • stapler
  • blue or silver glitter
  • glue
  • 3 craft sticks
  • tape
  • brown and blue paint
Steps:
  1. To make a ship, cut a paper plate in half. Paint the bottom side of each half brown.
  2. Place the halves together so the unpainted sides face each other. Staple the pieces together along the rounded edge.
  3. To make the water, fold the other plate in half. Cut a 6½-inch slit along the crease and unfold the plate. Paint the bottom side of the plate blue. While the paint is still wet, add blue or silver glitter.
  4. Glue a white paper rectangle to each of two craft sticks and a white paper triangle to a third stick. Glue a small fabric or paper flag to the top of each stick.
  5. When the paint is dry, tape the sticks inside the ship. Stand the ship in the slit in the water.
